C40 City Solutions Platform – Join the community

Call for solution providers to join our community! The C40 City Solutions Platform facilitates early-stage public-private collaboration to co-create and accelerate the implementation of innovative solutions to cities’ urgent climate challenges. The programme is generously funded by Realdania and EIT Climate-KIC.

As part of the C40 World Mayors’ Summit 2019, CSP Live @ BLOXUB was convened by C40, CLEAN and Danish Design Centre (DDC) on 9th October, bringing together more than 70 thought-leaders to innovate ideas and solutions for Helsinki’s clean heat challenge and Copenhagen’s sustainable food procurement challenge.

The unique event ran two workshops for cross-sector solution co-creation, led by DDC, and a reception with keynote speakers and pitches from the workshop teams. The speakers included Mayor Jan Vapaavuori of Helsinki, Mayor Jorge Muñoz Wells of Lima and Deputy Mayor Franciska Rosenkilde of Copenhagen. The speakers inspired a variety of private & academic solution providers to find innovative & feasible solutions to urgent city climate challenges. A diverse range of participants attended the event, including international and local businesses, consultants, academics, start-ups and NGOs.

The cities’ challenges

Copenhagen’s challenge was to improve food procurement processes from small, local, organic and sustainable producers, to reach the City’s target of reducing CO2 emissions from public meals by 25% by 2025. Helsinki’s challenge was to find innovative long-term solutions for replacing coal to produce emissions-free heat without biomass, as part of the City’s aim to become carbon-neutral by 2035 and to prepare for the coal ban in 2029.

Key ideas for Copenhagen focused on creating hubs, co-ops and digital platforms to connect networks of producers and businesses. The Helsinki challenge sparked a diverse range of ideas to incentivise citizens, real estate owners and energy producers to invest in existing green energy solutions. Overall, the city officials were impressed by the calibre of the pitches and are hoping to take a range of ideas forward.

Helsinki are already planning to launch the ‘Helsinki Energy Challenge’ competition in 2020, where solution providers can pitch their ideas for an impressive €1 million-euro prize. Click here to visit the competition website.
