System Mapping of Nordic Alternative Protein Industry

With a growing world population, global food security will be one of the greatest challenges of our time. The area of farmed land is constantly expanding thus outcompeting the forests which we depend on to keep C02 levels at stake. It is essential for future food security in EU, that we replace imported soy with sustainable, local sources for protein for feed and food.

Three quarters of arable land is exploited to produce soy for export ending up as feed stock for meat production. Despite the substantial allocation of farmland for production of protein for feed, meat and dairy products supply only 17 percent of global caloric supply and only 33 percent of global protein supply. A key challenge for future feed and food security in EU is meeting the demand for sustainable, domestic-grown, plant-based, insect-based or algae-based proteins for food and especially for feedstock.

A unique Nordic position

The Nordic region is in a unique position to build a regional protein industry. With an extensive aquaculture industry and some of the world´s leading research institutions along with strong support systems for entrepreneurship, the region holds a huge, untapped potential for self-sufficiency when it comes to protein to ensure food security without compromising the environment.

Systems Mapping Workshop

On Monday and Tuesday 26-27th The Department of Food and Resource Economics of Copenhagen University will host a System Mapping workshop gathering relevant Nordic players within the field to map out the possibilities for developing a Nordic Alternative Protein Industry. The aim this workshop is to map the alternative protein ecosystem in the Nordic region, to position and identify main stakeholders, industry actors, relevant policy actions and challenges to define and engage partners in innovation activities regarding the diversification of protein sources.

The workshop is supported by EIT Climate-KIC in collaboration with the Regional Nordic Hub under the Climate-Smart Agriculture Booster.

“The partners are looking very much forward for this opportunity and we have the honour of the participation of Stephanie Draper from Forum for the Future who will facilitate the event and hold the frames for two days of intensive work” says Henrik Søndergaard, Innovation Lead at Climate-KIC Nordic and one of the engineers behind the idea of the workshop.

Facilitating Systemic Change

Forum for the Future is a not-for-profit aiming to accelerate a sustainable future. “We believe that in order to create a sustainable future, we need to transform whole systems using a systems change approach. – “We are specialists in applying systemic approaches including systems diagnostics such as system mapping to drive practical action” says Stephanie Draper who is especially interested in the protein question. – “We have been working on accelerating a sustainable protein system for the last four years – mapping the overall protein system and working on key leverage points such as alternative proteins in animal feed and more plant-based diets”

The combination of the systemic approach together with her extensive knowledge of the protein field makes Forum for the Future ideally placed to support the University of Copenhagen/IFRO and Climate-KIC in developing this initial diagnostic and shaping the future strategy.
