EIT Climate-KIC Nordic at the COP24

The 24th Conference of the Parties (COP24) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will take place from 2-14 December 2018, in Katowice, Poland. During the event, Climate-KIC Nordic will be engaged in a range of various activities at the Nordic Pavilion. Find more information below on the sessions we are organising!

5 December – Building Green

On 5 December, the Nordic Pavilion will host a thematic day on the big potential the building sector has in mitigating climate change. Here, Climate-KIC Nordic is organising two sessions. The first one is organised as part of the secretariat for the Wood in Construction project.

10:15 – 11:30 The Impact of Using Wood as Material for Construction
– A Broader Look at the Impacts on Agenda 2030 From an Increased Usage of Wood

Substituting high climate impact materials in the construction sector with wood can reduce significant CO2 emissions. This session, hosted by the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Wood in Construction project, will present and discuss an SDG study, examining the impact of the full value chain by wood in construction.

12:15 – 13:15 Zero Emission Construction Sites Are Possible Very Soon
– Don’t Wait For 2030

The second session will examine how to achieve zero emission from the construction sites – a project EIT Climate-KIC Nordic is working on for the Nordic Council of Ministers.

New construction in urban areas in the Nordics and elsewhere is a big contributor to emissions of CO2 and other pollutants. Transforming construction sites to zero emission sites will be an important measure to achieve carbon neutral cities within the near future. This session will discuss how we can achieve this.

December 6 – Rethinking with Bioeconomy

On 6 December, the Nordic Pavilion will rethink with the bioeconomy. In particular, EIT Climate-KIC Nordic is hosting a session on alternative protein.

12:15 – 14:15 Climate Change and the Emerging Bioeconomy

The increasing global population will demand a 50% increase in both food and energy production by 2050. That’s why it is fundamental for our production to become sustainable. This session will thus investigate the management of renewable biological resources and their conversion to food, livestock feed, bio-based products and bioenergy. The bio-economy integrates many solutions for a more sustainable future. This can include better utilisation of industrial by-products, innovative products from existing resources, and even the cultivation of new resources like algae and seaweed.

EIT Climate-KIC and The Nordic Council of Ministers have been actively promoting the transition to the bio-economy for several years and during this session, we will explore how and with whom the process should be continued and accelerated.

December 7 – Challenging the increasing globalisation

On 7 December, The Nordic Pavilion will bring up the topic of creating urban futures and how urbanisation poses a major opportunity for proven and scalable solutions for cutting emissions.

12:00 – 13:00 Factors Influencing the Transformation of Cities

Climate-KIC Nordic will focus on the circularity city. In particular, we will explore how to use Circular Economy as an innovation tool in the municipalities for strengthening capacity for systemic innovation.

We are looking forward to this prestigious event. Bright thinkers, fruitful collaborations and a cleaner tomorrow!
