Sustainable Nordic Alternative Protein Industry

A Nordic sustainable perspective on a European challenge

The Nordic region is in a unique position to build a regional, sustainable protein industry. With an extensive agri- and aquaculture industry and some of the world’s leading research institutions, a worldwide reputation of food security along with strong support systems for entrepreneurship on national as well as the Nordic level through the Nordic Council of Ministers and its institutions, the region holds a huge untapped potential for self-sufficiency when it comes to protein to ensure food security without compromising the environment.

The workshop will take a systemic approach on how to initiate and catalyse actions within a circular bioeconomy framework for a Sustainable Nordic Alternative Protein Industry for both feed and food production. The aim is to gather key stakeholders from governance, research and business to address two main questions:

  1. What demand-led needs and challenges – globally and regionally – are relevant to consider for the development of a Climate Friendly and Sustainable Nordic Alternative Protein Industry?
  2. What actions can be initiated and who should/could initiate and take responsibility for its realisation and on what level can/must this happen (local, national, macroregional, international)?

Expected Outcome:

  • Enhanced insights to the rationale, dynamics and systemic perspective on challenges and opportunities related to the development of a Nordic Initiative on Alternative Proteins.
  • Inputs to a catalogue for recommendations and actions for future ecosystem engagement.
